Teeth Grinding Treatment

Teeth grinding, known medically as bruxism can cause several painful concerns for those who suffer from them. As well as causing damage to the enamel of the teeth, teeth grinding can also cause muscle tension, leading to pain in the head and jaw. Teeth grinding occurs subconsciously, either when sleeping or as a result of bad habits, and can be exacerbated by stress, anxiety, smoking or alcohol.

What does the treatment do?

Many teeth grinding treatments are designed to protect the teeth but do little to combat the muscle tension and the pains that it causes. However, this is where muscle relaxing injections can be useful. Such a treatment blocks the signals from nerve endings to the muscles, and, when injected into the jaw muscles by a skilled practitioner, can help reduce persistent teeth grinding. Reducing teeth grinding can help patients preserve oral help, relieve pain in the head, ear, and jaw, and dramatically improve the quality of sleep.

In order to ensure accurate, precise treatment for you, a thorough consultation with Dermasurge’s consultant dermatologist, Dr Hiba Injibar, will be carried out prior to undergoing any procedures. During the consultation, Dr Injibar will perform a thorough assessment of the jaw muscles to identify where the injection will be best administered for the most effective relief from tooth grinding.

This lady, in the video below, came to me for relaxing the masseter muscle. She clenches her teeth during sleep and when stressed and this produces pain in the jaw and also headaches. It also causes the muscle to look bulky creating an unfeminine squared jaw which some ladies do not like.

By injecting botulinum toxin in this muscle she will be unable to clench her teeth thereby reducing the pain and contraction and also flattening the appearance of the muscle giving the jawline a more rounded feminine appearance.

Treatment repeated 2-3 times per year to maintain results.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon will I see results?2020-06-24T19:20:30+01:00

Injectable treatments are not immediate, and patients should expect to wait for around 2-3 weeks for it to fully take effect. However paitents may start to see results before this point. As the treatment starts to take hold, patients should see a marked improvement in teeth grinding symptoms.

How long do results last?2020-06-24T19:16:19+01:00

The effects of injectables are not permanent and wear off over time. This usually takes between 3 and 6 months, depending on how it is processed and broken down by the body. To maintain the effects of treatment, repeat treatments are necessary. Patients are advised to prolong effects by topping up the treated areas before it has completely worn off, rather than retreating from scratch, as this gives better results over longer periods of time.

What is the downtime?2020-06-24T16:10:43+01:00

Injectables are non-invasive, and there is very little associated downtime, though patients should take care to follow Dr Injibar’s aftercare advice. Most patients are able to resume their daily activities immediately.

Am I suitable for injectable treatments?2020-06-24T15:29:43+01:00

During your consultation, Dr Injibar will ask about your medical history in order to identify any contraindications. This includes pregnancy and breastfeeding, or those who suffer neurological damage in the treatment area
