Pigmentation problems, also known as hyperpigmentation, are areas of dark spots in the skin, and can be caused by hormonal changes, melasma, sun damage, or certain medications. The darkening is caused when an excess of melanin, a brown pigment in the skin, occurs, forming deposits within the skin that take on this darker colour. Hyperpigmentation can occur in all skin types, but is most common in those with a darker complexion.
